Sandblasting Tips

Fatima Rangwala
In general, a sandblasting technique is expended in the removal of rust, paint, or any sort of corrosion from a metal surface. Mere renovations or brush cleaning doesn't really help as much as sandblasting does.

What is Sandblasting?

Basically, it is a process that uses an air compressor to force tiny particles of sand or any other material against a working surface. Normally, this process is executed on metals, but these days glass etching is also done using a similar procedure.
Although it's quite a messy process, it is still one of the best ways to remove rust, paint, and corrosives from a metal or glass surface.

Equipment to be Used

An air compressor must be used for propelling the sand along with large volumes of air against a defined object. The compressor's air moving ability is measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute). Normally, it is best to use one which works at 200 CFM. Moreover, a separate sand chamber consisting of sand particles is used for sandblasting.
A huge reservoir is used to facilitate the air compressor, to exert an airflow. The air coming out from the compressor should be dry. If there is any water in it, it will clog up the tool's nozzle tip. Remember to periodically dispatch water from the air compressor's hose. The machine shouldn't lack in efficiency and performance due to building up of water.

Medium

Sand has a distinct advantage as a grinding material. It can be reused, reprocessed, and cleaned all over again, till the larger particles do not come to a consistent size and wear out totally. Sand is available in particle sizes called grits. Ensure that sand is nice and dry; for it will flow well through the machine.
Sand size should remain the same as that of the orifice and nozzle, so that it can travel smoothly. Larger the grit size, more are the chances of the system clogging up. Once it's clogged, the system has to be replaced or repaired, something that will cost you quite a bit.
Also, make sure you check the medium or material before throwing it in the reservoir tank. Rocks, pebbles, or any sort of bits of bark shouldn't clog the entire machine. Keep the sand extremely dry in condition; moisture shouldn't cause it to clump up.

Medium Delivery

It is better to sand blast the entire area, than just the parts where the metal is rusted or corroded. Be consistent while carrying out this procedure, and blast the area evenly. Once you're done, use a fine brush and clean the compressed air. Also, dust the surface clean.

Sandblasting Safety Tips

Remember, sand breaks apart and creates fine bits of dust on the surface. This type of dust can gather or stick around everywhere in a confined area. Therefore, it's best to research thoroughly on the sanding materials, etc., before beginning any such project.
Safety comes first. When you perform any sort of sandblasting, dry or wet, wear appropriate eye and face protection equipment. There are small, minute particles which are eventually going to bounce back into your face.
Secondly, wear proper hand gloves and a long-sleeved shirt made of a thick material, which will at least protect your bare skin from the particles. Appropriate footwear like heavy boots will protect your toes and feet from coarse cutting sand.
Sandblasting has proven to be a quick, convenient, and fine method of rust removal, that is used in many industrial applications and processes.
