Forests of the World
A forest is an defined as an area of about 0.5 hectares of land covered by more than 10% of trees.
Forests are categorized into three general types: temperate, tropical, and boreal. We shall have a look at these top 3 types of forests in the world.
Let's take a quick look at these top 3 types of forests and a few interesting facts related to them.
Temperate Forest
The temperate forest are the 2nd largest biomes on earth. They cover 25% of world's forest area. Most of the trees found here are leaf-shedding types.
There are different types of temperate forests due to its large size. These include deciduous, coniferous, mixed, and rainforests.
Commonly Found Trees
Oak, elm, beech, hemlock, hickory maple, basswood, cottonwood, willow are some of the trees growing temperate forests.
These forests have 3 to 4 tree species per square kilometer. As their canopies are not dense, sunlight can reach the ground. Thus, the soil is rich in nutrients and supports a rich ecosystem.
Tropical Forest
The tropical forests grows near the equator around 23.5° north and 23.5° south. It is found in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America.
The trees in tropical forests grow about 25-30 meters tall and are very dense. About 25% of medicines used by us are from rainforest.
Commonly Found Trees
Evergreen trees with broad leaves, orchids, bromeliads, mosses, ferns, vines, and palm trees.
Although 50% of the world's flora and fauna are found in tropical forests, the soil lacks nutrients and is acidic.
Boreal Forest
Boreal forests are the largest terrestrial biome. They spread across Eurasia, North America, Siberia, Scandinavia, Alaska, and Canada
The boreal forests consists of tall, evergreen, coniferous trees. Despite the harsh climate, a unique ecosystem thrives within the boreal forests.
Commonly Found Trees
Deciduous trees as well as conifers that can survive the extreme climate such as pine, fir, and spruce.
The dense canopy does not allow much light to reach the ground. The boreal forests are home to caribou, hawks, moose, bear, deer, hares, shrews, lynx, foxes, wolves, woodpeckers, and bats.
Forests Help Sustain Life
Forests spread across wet, dry, extremely cold as well as hot regions. Each of them boast of a unique ecosystem that spells unique life in every form.
We need to protect our forests from devastation. Forests control the climatic effects on our planet. They are the lungs of our earth. We should do our bit to protect forests from deforestation, illegal mining, poaching, and other activities that affect our forests.
