North America is the third largest continent, area wise, and fourth, population wise.
It covers a gross area of 24,709,000 square kilometers, which makes up 16.5% of the total land surface of the planet. It has been the birthplace of many ancient civilizations, such as the Aztecs and the Mayans. This area was later colonized by the European countries in the 16th and 17th centuries.
It was earlier mistaken to be the East Indies, however, the Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, was the first to realize and suggest that this land mass, was in fact, not the East Indies.
This prompted the German cartographers, Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann, to rename the continent as America, which was a latinized version of Amerigo Vespucci's name. The huge extent of this area, later caused it to be called North America and South America, based on the hemispheres of the planet.
